Thoughts of Chocolate vs. Weight Loss Continue

After the experience at the weigh in for Biggest Loser VII at the fitness club in Auburn, WA, it was good to see the email today in my email inbox from Calorie Count.  The second time around for the weight loss challenge at Vision Quest Sport and Fitness seems just a bit tougher.  Last night I missed my workout because I was 30 miles north.  One demerit for me.

Chocolate, Straight from the Source

image1

I used to think chocolate was a rich and sweet treat best enjoyed from fancy packages with European names.  While by no means an expert, I thought I knew a thing or two about this dark and delicious food so many of us adore.  However, after traveling directly to the source in Mexico and Central America, I now realize chocolate and cocoa is a much more interesting and diverse product, with a fascinating history...

We have a sign in our kitchen that says, "Life's unpredictable. Eat dessert first."

It's been said that variety is the spice of life, and this is especially true of the foods we eat. For myself, if I couldn't eat chocolate at all, it would severely restrict the choices that I had.

I recommend the Atkins products. I've been using them for years. Their shakes, especially the chocolate ones, are better than any others I've ever tasted, and they make a number of yummy protein bars. Other brands include the Met-RX Chocolate Chunk, Pure Protein S'Mores, and EAS AdvantEDGE Chocolate Chip Brownie and Cookies & Cream varieties.

Be sure you look at the nutrition labels, however. Many products are called protein bars, but have as much sugar in them as a regular candy bar.

The products I've mentioned are sweetened with sugar alcohols and Splenda. I've read the the alcohols can be as detrimental as sugar; but I can tell you as someone with reactive hypoglaecemia that I haven't found this to be the case.

Atkins low carb has worked for me! But it is a more radical change long term. Yes to watching out for the bars. Sugar alcohols are not my friend.
