Thinking about starting a business and wondering what might be common barriers

starting a businessAn intrapreneur who works for "the company" has his or her eye out and ear to the ground for the perfect idea to start a new business.  It may be good to look to those who have been in business for 5+ years and still overcoming the barriers.

intrapreneur - "A person within a large corporation who takes direct responsibility for turning an idea into a profitable finished product through assertive risk-taking and innovation"

These are missing pieces of the puzzle for many small business owners and entrepreneurs who after 5+ years are not yet successful:

> The Purple Cow (Seth Godin says is best)
> Focus (Distractions are killers)
> The Package/Product (A product which is understood easily by the customer)
> The Process (A sales process)
> The Connections (Need strong advocates who will share)
> Research (Someone else is already in front of you)
> Planning (Even the back of a placemat has worked for many start up businesses)
> The Calendar (Everything is built twice. First in the calendar before you execute)
> The Testimonials (Proof that you are as good as you say you are)
> The Guerrilla Marketing Plan.(I have one)
> The Lack of Will to do what it takes.

Which reminds me of the American Revolution. "We declare independence....". and they were willing to fight for it.  Are you ready to fight?
                             Will Smith: "I know what I believe and I am willing to die for it."

Someone I know started a business a couple years ago. She started with no clients. When asked "What did you do to start when you had no clients?"  Her response was: "I did marketing 40+ hours a week. I had no clients to work with and time on my hands."  Today she is only available by referral and her days are full.  She is an exceptional talent with high skill but knew that to rely on reputation alone was not going to grow business.

Those are quick thoughts but your own barriers will very likely be different from mine or those who come to me for assistance.  Everyone brings something different to the marketplace.  My barriers will not be yours.

You will most likely take an inventory of your business assets but remember to include people, skills and talents, years of expertise, ambassadors.  If you are going to go it alone, then be sure to have enough money (a very thick wallet)

Hey...thanks for the mention. A person also needs to believe in themselves even if their families is unsupportive (which happens often).

The great est barrier to starting a business is usually inside your head. It the unsupportive thoughts that take most of us out of the game!
