Trombone, Drums or Clarinet? Why is marketing hard?
Seth Godin recently made a great point in his blog about the fact that marketing is actually part science and part art. I have often thought this but unable to put it into the words that Seth Godin does.
The brilliant Roy Williams also speaks of marketing to be more than a simple thing as he emphasizes the importance of reading poetry to understand how to be a better marketer.
I will not disagree with either of these amazing people but I would like to add my two cents worth. Music. Marketing is like music and each of us has a musical instrument.
Music is a little bit science, math, art, and personal heart. Music can move, motivate, inspire but can also chase people away.
If you have played the trombone and know how to read the music can you play the clarinet? Do you believe a clarinet player will have it a simple transition to play the drums? It may be the same music, it may be the same notes.... but the instrument played needs to be learned, practiced and practiced more.
Internet marketing is playing to the same audience with the same basic needs /wants as those before the internet existed. Many are stumped and blame those who sell the products. Maybe the answer lies within each person who is trying to play all the instruments instead of picking just one?
Both internet marketing and music require some basic skill and the better you can play your instrument of choice, the better you can move the people to feel, act and move with your music (marketing).
Don't try to play every instrument in the band. Pick one. Stick with it. Make your music be memorable and moving so that those who come to you will want to come back again .... and again. For your business (online or offline) pick your product(s), pick your method for marketing and packaging. You will NOT be good at all of them. Maybe a blog? Maybe podcast? In all cases of course, you will need a list..... and someone to "follow".
Not to beat the drum more (ok, I will beat it more). Justin and Chaunna Brooke have good music regarding internet marketing. They understand their instruments and can be a good support. They teach and support those who are involved. They are real people living the life. No hype, no pitch... plenty of reality.
